11th June 2016
Staff:MLA, LST, LAR, MBR, MPN
Weather: Cold day, sunny and grey
Projects: Great Reed Warbler, Ortolan Bunting, Marsh Harrier
The day started as an inspiration to LST today!
It started with LST and MBR going to Husön to catch a Blyth’s Warbler. And not only they got the Blyth’s but they also got a Grasshopper Warbler and a Whitethroat!
Since LST was feeling inspired, MBR and MLA joined him to catch as well two Crane chicks near Öby Kulle. It is amazing how well camouflage works.. In spite of not being able to fly, both chicks managed to hide in the grass laying down very quiet in the grass. Therefore, after a short run throughout a field, LST manage to find one of the chicks, but the second disappeared without traces. After a successful start of the day, the projects started with a lot of motivation.
GRW team surveyed Åslasjön and Sörbysjön. LAR found 2 new nests in Åslasjön and got good indications for a nest that has been hard to find. She also had the first chick confirmed in this lake. MBR also had a nest with 3 chicks already, meaning that started hatched yesterday.
MPN joined LST and MLA for some Ortolan Bunting behaviour observations. Proceeding with the lucky day, we managed to find a very well hidden nest in Sörosletten. However, we noticed that some individuals are moving quite a lot, so further observations will be needed in the next days.
In the afternoon, LST and MLA went to Sörbysjön to check for a Marsh Harrier nest, but this time no luck. Behaviour observations were made to better understand interactions between males and females during breeding season.
Some interesting sightings of the day:
- Red-necked Grebe with 2 chicks in Åslasjön
- Great Egret, one in Åslasjön and another in Sörbysjön
