Great reed warblers
MBR joined TMJ at Segesjön today to ring a nest of chicks. DHT departed, Jakob arrived. MBR left us after a long season working with the great reeds, we’re sad to see him go and wish him all the best for his future studies.
Ortolans
JMY was joined by MPN to check on Ortolans around Söröslätten, birds were observed in the area, including one male with a beak full of food for youngsters. Judging by the size of the food the buntings are either feeding large chicks or fledglings. JMY and MPN concluded their spring efforts with a celebratory cake shared by all at the observatory courtesy of Jan Sondell; Thanks Jan.
It was concluded that a minimum of four pairs of Ortolans have attempted to nest in Kvismaren this spring – things could be looking up.
Standardised ringing
Ringing wasn’t attempted this morning due to rain games. A check of the weather at 3am showed bustling clouds over Norrbyås and a drive down the track proved it to be raining severly, with the forecast seemingly correct, we returned to bed until the mid morning when we woke to bright skies. Ringing was undertaken in the garden but with limited success. Hopefully we will be out again tomorrow, but the forecast shows rain and strong winds.
