4th July 2015

Staff: JMY, MBR, APN, MMJ, TMJ, CBS, MLA

Weather:Hot day reaching 30°C. Gentle breeze throughout much of day.

Projects: Great Reed Warbler, Standardised Ringing, Skylarks

Great Reed Warbler

MBR went to Sörbyjön in the morning to catch a female for a blood sample. He was successful , and also caught 2 male birds as a bonus, with blood samples taken from all of them.

In morning MLA checked 2 nests, and found one male singing long song meaning that he is trying to attract a second female. She found 2 predated nests in Åslasjön and Västra in the afternoon.

Standardised Ringing

A very slow morning at Banvallen saw only 10 new birds and 16 recaptures processed in total. Best of the bunch was a new Icterine Warbler. Species totals for new birds were as follows:

Sedge Warbler - 2
Reed Warbler - 1
Icterine Warbler - 1
Garden Warbler - 1
Willow Warbler - 4
Blue Tit - 1

Skylarks

JMY surveyed 9 Skylark plots in the morning and noted a bird feeding young too, so marked the position of a possible nest site to be confirmed later. She also went to Torsholmen to try and find the Ortolan there as she had heard it singing while surveying in the morning.

Ad-Hoc/sightings

A Honey Buzzard drifted over Rysjön mid-afternoon, seen by APN. CBS saw a Red Kite and 8 Common Buzzard soaring over Fräknabottnen.
