Weather:calm but sunny Beautiful day weather-wise with few scattered showers in the late afternoon. 18°C

The teams in Kvismaren had mixed fortunes today, from being flipped out of canoes unwillingly by colleagues to releasing birds accidentally we all had a bit of a mare!

Great reed warbler

The great reed warbler team attempted to catch a male in Rysjön however drew a rather wet blank after MLA plunged poor MBR into the murky depths in an attempt to re-enter a floating canoe. With the sun beating down all was soon forgiven and laughed off in true field work fashion. Jakob struggled to successfully read the male singing long song in Värstra Fågelsjön and as a result left empty handed.

Ringing installation

The ringing team, Myself, MMJ and APN took to Vallen in the morning preparing net gates ahead of the belated start to CES. Ongoing strimmer problems have jaded efforts but we will soon be on track, the aim is for standardised ringing to start tomorrow 23rd June and continue until 30th Sept. With Vallen in working order we recruited the help of the superswede, Maja Bergman in the afternoon. Along with her trusty strimmer, Maja flattened most of the net gates in banvallen within an hour or so, Maja could only aid with work if someone at the bird observatory could look after Sandy, the puppy. Maria loved the prospect of a quiet afternoon dog sitting so whilst myself, Alex and Maja cleared Banvallen throughout intermittent showers, Sandy and Maria had a pleasant afternoon on the veranda.

Ortolan buntings and Slyalrks

Julie continues her studies on Skylark nesting and Ortolans within Kvismaren and today was rather successful in finding a fledged ortolan being tended to by parents. Julie also located a pair of Red-backed Shirke in Restamossen which after a hasty lunch, myself and Alex set out to see. Whilst onsite at Restamossen we recorded 2 singing Wood warblers and Green Woodpecker amongst the commoner species. Alex also juggled a female blackbird for a moment before she gave him the slip.

Julie also approximately located a skylark nest, though without more eyes it is near impossible to pinpoint. Magnus Persson arrived in the station in the evening for a meeting with Julie about ongoing projects.

Highlight sightings of the day – Hawfinch on Norrbyas feeding station, Long-tailed tits moving through the treetops by Rysjon, Large Blue butteflies (at least 5 adults on the wing) and chimney sweeper moths which became abundant for a short while in banvallen during the morning.
