DWE and his crow (Picture: Daniel Wade)

9th June 2015

Staff: DWE, JMY, MBR, EKP, TMJ, APN, MÅN, MMJ

Weather:Beautiful warm, sunny, calm day.
Projects: Great Reed Warbler, Crows, Ortolan Bunting, Skylarks.

Crows
DWE showed APN & MMJ areas which still need checking for crows and their fledglings, as tomorrow he will be leaving for sunnier climes. In the evening EKP accompanied DWE and APN to Åslaholmen and Sörön areas to catch and ring fledglings. The two at Åslaholmen were even bigger than expected and flew away! Luckily at Sörön one of the two fledglings was a bit smaller and could not fly as well, so this was caught and ringed.

Great reed warbler
MÅN went to Segersjön to try and locate more nests..

Ortolan Bunting
JMY spent a couple of hours in the evening at Torsholmen, hoping to get sight or sound of the Ortolan there, but to no avail. MPN went on a similar mission at Husön, but unfortunately no nests were located here either.

Skylarks

EKP & JMY were out surveying plots in the Autumn planted corn when the farmer called to say that hay harvest would begin again at Sörby. MPN joined them to observe what happened- seeing buzzards, a kestrel and marsh harrier amongst others hunting over the freshly cut fields. Surveys will continue in the coming days to assess the impact the cutting has had on nesting skylarks in these fields.
