29th May 2015.
Staff: DWE, JMY, MBR, EKP, TMJ, MTA, MPN
Weather: Windy day, calming a little in the evening.
Projects: Wetland Census, Great Reed Warbler, Hooded Crow, Skylark, Bird’s of Prey.
In the morning, TMJ and MBR performed there Wetland Census’ in order to counteract the bad weather due in the next couple of days. MTA valiantly continued her search for a Great Reed Warbler nest in the reeds of Sörbyjön and DWE joined JMY, EKP and MPN on Skylark watch.
The bad weather hampered the efforts with most teams being unsuccessful in task, with no nests found by both parties. After lunch, the weather brightened so Team Skylark went to continue to find more Skylark plots via a trip to see a Golden Oriole who has taken residence in Lövholmen. The Oriole did not show, but some slightly dodgey climbing skills showed that the Hooded Crow nest here has 2 medium sized and squarking chicks. This is the first nest where we have confirmed a figure for the chicks, and it shall not be the last! Much more work to be done!
In the evening, I promised MBR a chance to ring some Buzzard chicks as thanks for helping out with the Starling project. I also needed some practise at climbing, and so I took him and EKP out to a nest me and DHO found in mid-April. I was delighted to find 3 fuzzy and well sized chicks which we ringed happily in pleasant evening sun.
