26th May 2015
Staff: DWE, JMY, MBR, TMJ, EKP, DHT, MTA, MPN
Weather: Sunny, windy
Projects: Hooded Crow, Starling, Skylark, Ortolan, Great Reed Warbler.
DWE, JMY, EKP and MPN set the alarms very early in order to attempt a catch on a pair of unringed Ortolan Buntings at Sörösletten. Despite some scepticism as to the probability of success, ‘Team Ortolan’ succeeded in capturing 2 different males who now have colour rings V5-92 and H5-89. Also caught were a Yellowhammar, White Wagtail, Chaffinch and Wheatear.
After this DWE, JMY & EKP checked Hidingsta åkrar and Okna utmarker for Ortolans to little success, but we did confirm 1 of the 2 Crow nests in the area to be still active and also locate a Long Eared Owl nest.
The Great Reed Warbler team had less luck today (maybe Team Ortolan stole it all) with no new birds captured.
In the afternoon, DWE and MBR went out to continue ringing Starling chicks, with the average brood size continuing to be over 5. A slight bump in the road as we realised that we were running low on rings, so we hope the order of new rings will arrive sooner rather than later!
(Sorry MBR, I accidentally deleted your diary entry and had to rewrite it!)
