This photo does not come from today, but we promised you a photo of Marsh Harrier Chick some days ago! Chick ringed the 29/6/14 in Åslaholmen (photo: MSL)

1st day of July at the Kvismare fågelstation = 1st day of ringing staff = long day of work!

Personal: Teresa, Magnus, Helena, Daniel, Lena, Carlos, Marianne ; Guest: Dennis, Emilia and August

Weather: Cloudy in the early morning, then sunny for the rest of the day (little rain in the late afternoon)

Projects; Great Reed Warbler; Farmland Birds; Ringing program and ringing setup

Today was the first day of the ringing session, so the Kvismare fågelstation began to work very early (some get up at 1h30, others at 3h). For a first day, it was a quite good session: 92 birds were caught in the net (75 new ringed and 17 retraps). Here is the detail of the birds newly ringed (in Swedish code, sorry):

ACSCI: 15

SÄSÅN: 4

LÖSÅN: 3

TÖSAN: 18

SÄSPA: 10

BLMES: 3

TAOXE: 11

SYBOR: 5

NÄGAL: 4

GUSPA: 2

During the ’rush hours’, we had to take a few nets down. A Caspian tern has been also observed near the ringing table. Participants: CMZ, ATN, DMG, MPN, HHT, MSL. The afternoon was spent for strimming at Bamwallen (DMG, HHT). These place will be ready for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, The Great reed warbler team caught a swift by chance in their net in Nyängen, this bird is ringed now! They also ringed a new nest (of GRW of course) in Sejersjü.

Concerning the Farmland survey team, they caught 3 Yellowhammer chicks fledged in Husön (conventional crops) with the help of a net and took the blood sample. Now, this part of the work is completed, we have enough samples from Yellowhammer chicks from the Eko. crops and the Conv. Crops. This team also tried to catch an Ortolan male who nested in Ängfallet few days ago, for attaching a light-logger on it, but the Ortolan saw the net.. We hope to catch it soon!

This day was also the last (but not least) day of work of Lena. She took the bus on the afternoon for going back to Germany (Kiel). We will miss her positive attitude and enthusiasm for the work (and the rest) at the Station.

We wish you a great continuation in you studies (Master, internships), Lena! Hope to get some news from you and Torben ;-)
