Staff: DWE, JMY, MBR, EKP, TMJ, APN, MMJ
Weather:Beautiful warm, sunny day with a slight breeze.
Projects: Great Reed Warbler, Ringing site checking, Ortolan Bunting, Skylarks, Kestrels, Savi’s.
Great reed warbler
MBR went to Rysjön and discovered a new nest there, with little change in the other territories.
Skylarks and Ortolans
EKP and JMY surveyed autumn corn plots for numbers of Skylark territories at Bärsta and Sörby. They then took DWE to the train station as he headed home. JMY observed the Ortolan at Ängfallet and EKP drove to Sanna Kroa to check up on a report of an Ortolan there but could not confirm its prescence.
Ringing site checking
APN and MMJ visited all the net rides that will be used for standardised ringing after midsummer to see how much maintenance was needed before they can be used. Fortunately most rides seem to be in pretty good shape with only a few new poles and some vegetation cutting needed.
Kestrels
APN, MMJ, MBR and EKP went to check the Kestrel boxes around the reserve in the evening, finding that the chicks are still a little young to ring but looking healthy.
Savi’s
APN, MMJ and EKP went out at dusk to catch what was thought to be a new singing male Savi’s Warbler. It was caught quickly but turned out to be a male already colour-ringed here this year that has moved to a different area of the reserve.
