19th May 2015
Staff: DWE, JMY, MBL, TMJ, EKP
Weather: A lot of rain throughout the whole day with a little bit of sun in the evening
Projects: Great Reed Warbler, Ortolan bunting.
Early in the morning, before the rain started, MBL and TMJ went out to look for Great reed warblers and their nests which they recently started to build. They were happy to find a nest in Sörbysjön. Its building is about one third complete. This is only the second nest that we`ve found so far in Kvismaren this year.
Meanwhile exploiting the still dry weather JMY and EKP headed out for Ortolan buntings. They searched the area around the bird observatory like every morning and drove out to Fornskinnsmossen to look for singing males or even females. Although the conditions in that area seem quite fitting for ortolan buntings we could neither hear song nor see feather of them.
Later in the morning the skies opened. In spite of this, MBL and TMJ heroically drove out to Fågelsjön anyway to see if they could find any Great reed warblers there but there was not a single one. Up till now it seems as if all the Great reed warblers of Fågelsjön had moved to Sörbysjön, we’ll keep on examining that.
In the afternoon it was raining cats and dogs but neither Great reed warblers nor Ortolan buntings, so we focused on office work, especially DWE worked on our “To do on rainy days”-list.
Finally we got a little sun in the evening, so DWE, JMY and EKP searched for Ortolans around Ängfallet and Torsholmen but they seemed to not be amused by that aweful day and kept silent.
