Farmer spraying a field with pesticides, BUT left 2 ha unsprayed around an ortolan nest. Thank you Arne Andersson, farmer at Söröslätten. Foto: Magnus Persson

Farmer save an Ortolan Bunting brood!

Personel; Marianne, Daniel, Helena, Lena, Magnus, Teresa. Guests: August and Bengt

Weather; Nice sunny day

Projects; Great Reed Warbler; Farmland Birds; Marsh Harrier Nests; Ringing set up

And the news are... the farmer at Söröslaten did not spray with pesticides the field were the Ortolan Bunting had its nest. Keeping the field unsprayed will give a chance to the new brood of this species that has to face too many troubles already. A big THANK YOU from Kvismaren Fågelstation!

As for the Great Reed Warbler team, ringing chicks is the keynote of the day, although today we can talk about predation – a total of 4 predated nests – and an unfertile male – who has 2 nests that never will hatch. Very sad.

The ringing season is getting close and the ringing team is working hard on opening, clearing and setting up net rides. Vallen is finished. Let's do Banvallen now!

And what about the Marsh Harrier nests? Your heard already about all the work we previously did at the end of April. We located up to 18 nests! Now is time to find them and ring the chicks. So far, 2 nests found at Åslasjön. One was empty – may be flooded during the big rainny days in mid May? But another one, a late one, had 3 chicks!

Some photos tomorrow.

Good night everybody and see you on the next update.
