The Ortolan-male of the logger-female, caught during the morning ringing (Photo by Marianne Stoessel)

I can't stand the rain

Personel; Magnus, Lena, Helena, Teresa and Marianne. The working guests: August, and Bengt.

Weather; cloudy, rainy, a tiny little bit of sun around the afternoon and evening

Projects; Great Reed Warbler; Farmland Birds

Half past two, Sveden. A perfect time to stay in bed but the sun is already up, just like half of the Ortolan team of Fågelstation Kvismare. Already for a couple of times they used this best hour of the day to catch the long wanted Ortlan logger-female. This time it was up to Helena and Magnus but it seems like there will be more days of getting up in the middle of the night. Neither in the morning nor later during the day they could find any evidence of this female. However, they caught her male which means that at least him is still around.

A couple of hours after two, but not a tiny bit less motivated the second half of Kvismare stuff got up and started this beautiful cloudy morning. full of plans.

Unfortunately it turned out that the weather forecast mistook sun for rain and the morning activities drowned in a cloudburst. After ringing a GRWclutch in NyängenTeresa and Lena had to interrupt their lake visits for some hours and also Mariannes Observation were spoiled by the weather. later in the afternoon, however she was able to sight the second Ortolan pair around feeding a couple of times.

Anyway, August and Bengt (GRW-Project) managed to finish Fågelsjön and Åslasjön before they went home for a couple of days, and they uncovered three of the unknown females in Fågelsjön as logger birds. This is very uplifting news and we will catch the three within the next days. These will be quite busy in any respect, since all the GRW chicks managed to hatch at more or less the same time and they all get ready to be ringed right now or very soon, respectively.

In other respects there were at least two caspien terns around today. Double confirmed by August and Magnus. Maybe they are still around

That's it so far from Kvismare Fågelstation. I wish you all good night,
